What is REALLY going on here?
Thursday, May 12th, 2005I wish I had a better understanding of what the federal Liberals are doing right now. There must be something interesting developing behind closed doors in Parliament. As an outsider with a limited understanding of how our government really works, I’m having a hard time understanding how Paul Martin’s government can claim yesterday’s vote was not enough to bring down the government, and yet I fully understand what Mr. Martin is referring to when he talks about respecting the importance of parliamentary proceedure (even if I’m not personally an expert).
I’m willing to consider that I might be wrong, but, from what I’ve been reading lately, I’m in good company. My gut feeling is that the government has lost legitimacy, and it’s time for the electorate to do its duty.
As I’m currently taking two political science classes, I’m curious if the May 17th BC provincial election is actually having any effect on the decisions. I’m too tired tonight to analyze the subject much deeper. Regardless of the hidden factors, like the young Justin Trudeau has said, I am fearful that the ugliness of our political situation will empower Québecois seperatists:
“That’s one of the things that really scares me right now,” said the younger Trudeau. “I think we are far closer to the separation of Quebec than we have been for a very long time and I don’t think anyone in Ottawa particularly, but in the rest of Canada, is aware or ready to deal with it.”
Most people I’ve talked to today don’t even have a clue that there is a political storm brewing underway, and the face of Canada could easily change under our very noses.
